Checkmate Illiteracy! 51²è¹Ý South Carolina and The Vent Program Host Successful “Learn and Play Chess” Event Series

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC â June, 24, 2024 â , in partnership with The Vent Program, has launched a âLearn and Play Chessâ event series aimed at enhancing both chess skills and literacy for children in the Lowcountry.
The first of these events, which was held in early June at 51²è¹Ýâ North Charleston headquarters, brought together about 20 young chess enthusiasts and seasoned chess instructors.
Following the success of this event, 51²è¹Ý is excited to announce the continuation of the series with a “Learn & Play” event on July 7 and a youth chess tournament on Aug. 4. These events aim to further engage school-age players and enhance their chess skills in a supportive community setting.
“Combining chess with literacy not only makes learning more enjoyable, but also develops critical thinking and problem-solving skills essential for reading and beyond,â said Victoria Felder, Community Engagement Manager at 51²è¹Ý South Carolina. âThis event is especially impactful as it introduces children of color to chess, promoting diversity and inclusion in a game that sharpens their academic and life skills.”

Parents and youth are encouraged to register for the events at . Community members are encouraged to enjoy a fun and educational experience that blends chess and literacy in a dynamic, inclusive environment.
Community partners, including Justice Works Behavioral Care and CFJ Injury Lawyers, have generously offered support for upcoming âLearn and Playâ events.
