Important COVID-19 information: Our ProgramsFAQsResources for families

Los Angeles Area

51 first expanded our program from our Oakland headquarters in 2008, bringing our effective, affordable, and community-driven solution to the literacy crisis to the Greater Los Angeles area. Powered by community volunteers, our one-on-one tutoring provides equitable access to individualized literacy support that encourages students to develop a lifelong love of learning. Since 2008, our innovative and research-based program has empowered thousands of students in under-resourced Los Angeles elementary schools to grow their literacy skills, setting them on a path of lifelong success.

While the world often associates Los Angeles with the dazzling lives of celebrities and the luxurious allure of Hollywood, the city’s many diverse neighborhoods grapple with a stark reality: illiteracy rates remain alarmingly high in marginalized communities. Out of the 1.5 million students that call  Los Angeles County home, only 25% are reading at grade level by fourth grade (NAEP 2022). Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated existing educational disparities, creating a 26 percentage point gap between Black and Latinx students and their white and Asian classmates (L.A. Times 2021).

51’ overarching goal is to help close this gap through the power of literacy. We accomplish this goal by intentionally partnering with Title I elementary schools across the Greater Los Angeles Area where literacy resources are in short supply despite high demand. By providing equitable access to one-on-one, skills-based instruction using a gold-standard, research-based curriculum, our program serves as an academic recovery partner and levels the playing field for students in communities disproportionately affected by systemic barriers to opportunities.  As we look toward the future, we are working closely with our partners to grow our reach and promote educational equity for all students, ensuring children have the strong reading skills to reach their full potential.
