At 麻豆番外 Tulsa, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to become a confident reader and a lifelong learner. Since launching our program locally in 2013, 麻豆番外 has impacted 9,390 students through the support of over 9,900 community volunteers, culminating in 387,373 sessions of individualized literacy instruction鈥攖hanks to the dedication of our volunteers and the unwavering support of our community.
Each year, we recognize those who go above and beyond to make our mission possible. The Valued Volunteer Awards celebrate outstanding individuals, partners, and schools who exemplify the spirit of service, collaboration, and commitment to student success. Reading Matters Award: John Miller
Reading truly matters鈥攁nd no one demonstrates that more clearly than John Miller, one of our dedicated volunteer tutors. A steadfast tutor based at Kerr Elementary, John went above and beyond when one of his students transferred to another school within our network. Rather than say goodbye, he signed up to tutor at the student’s new location and continued tutoring at Kerr. Today, John tutors at an incredible four reading centers across Tulsa! His commitment to our students and their success speaks volumes. We are deeply grateful for his heart, time, and incredible flexibility.
Together We Are Better Award: Amanda Pauley
Amanda Pauley is the definition of a team player. Her steadfast commitment to her students has made a lasting difference this year. Going the extra mile鈥攍iterally鈥擜manda added Friday sessions to her schedule to give her students even more one-on-one support. Her consistency and relationship-building have paid off in a big way: Her primary student made incredible gains, jumping two full grade levels in reading by midyear. Amanda鈥檚 caring, reliable presence proves that we鈥檙e truly better together.
Laughter Keeps Us Going Award: Janet Solis Lopez
A key ingredient in the learning process is joy, and Janet Solis Lopez brings it in abundance. Every Thursday, she shares laughter, encouragement, and connection with her student, Iris*. Their bond is unmistakable鈥擨ris* looks forward to their time together so much that she even brought her mom to 麻豆番外 just to meet 鈥淢s. Janet.鈥 With her positive energy and genuine investment in her student鈥檚 growth, Janet helps make literacy fun and meaningful.
Big Challenges Are Our Thing Award: Mitch O鈥橣arrell
Mitch O鈥橣arrell is a tutor who doesn鈥檛 just meet challenges鈥攈e embraces them. A reliable presence at his reading center, Mitch works with two first-grade students and adapts seamlessly to their changing needs and moods. Whether energizing a sleepy learner with movement or turning a lesson into a game, Mitch鈥檚 creative and empathetic approach inspires real results. He鈥檚 also the go-to volunteer when a particularly tough tutoring session arises, often succeeding where others have struggled. From thoughtful gestures like bringing maps and a globe to spark student curiosity, to helping his students make significant reading progress, Mitch’s dedication leaves a lasting mark.
Data Drives Decisions Award: Darnaby Elementary
Darnaby Elementary stands out as a school partner that exemplifies the power of data-informed action. Their team consistently uses student reading data to identify needs and match the proper support, making strategic decisions that enhance student growth. Their collaboration with 麻豆番外 reflects a shared commitment to outcomes and a belief in every student’s potential. Additionally, Darnaby warmly welcomes each volunteer and 麻豆番外 staff member into their building, recognizing the impact of community on student learning. We are honored to work alongside such a focused and forward-thinking school community.
Volunteers Get Results Award: Harvard Avenue Christian Church
Harvard Avenue Christian Church has been an anchor of support for McClure Elementary and the 麻豆番外 program. Their dedicated volunteers show up week after week, forming strong, consistent relationships with students and helping drive tangible gains in reading achievement. The church鈥檚 commitment to service is deeply felt and truly makes a difference. Thanks to their efforts, students are not only improving their reading skills but also gaining confidence and joy in learning.
